In 1984 Elmer T, when he was the master distiller at Buffalo Trace, he released this brand in honor of Colonel Albert B Blanton after his passing. All barrels selected are taken from center racks of the only metal-clad rickhouse (warehouse H) at Buffalo Trace. This goes back to when Colonel Blanton would have bottles filled from his favorite aging location, for use at parties he would throw, never for sale. Blanton’s is considered the first “single barrel” and it started a new marketing campaign that would change the bourbon world. The horse stopper has 8 different poses or scenes of a race and are each labeled with a different letter spelling B-L-A-N-T-O-N- ‘ -S when all collected. If you mail in your used toppers to Buffalo Trace, they will mount onto a stave and send it back to you.
Blanton’s is produced in KY, but only the single barrel is sold in the US ***As of 2020 Blanton’s Gold and “Straight out of the Barrel” is now also sold in the US !!!*** Green Label, Black Label and other versions are sold all over the world.
Mashbill #2 is a higher rye mashbill and is used as in other popular brands worth checking out if you are a fan of this. Elmer T Lee, Rock Hill Farms, Ancient Age, Ancient Ancient Age and Hancock Reserve. Black label, Green label, Barrel Proof and Gold other variations available outside the US.
Chris’s Review
6.0
Smell:
Fruity citrus with a hint of spicy apricot jam.
Taste:
Charred oak with vanilla and pepper spice seasoning.
Finish: Hot 8
Mouth burn that follows into your throat. Licorice, not over complex medium linger leaving a buttery feeling.
Notes:
From the iconic bottle and horse, to the good overall bourbon flavor, I recommend this as a must have in the collection. This bottle is great to enjoy and introduce to house guests, making it a staple on you bar.
