Elijah Craig – Cranbrook Store Pick

Elijah Craig Small Batch – Cranbrook Liquors Barrel Pick.

Store Picks can be tricky. Cranbrook seems to have a lean towards cherries, which I like. According to Heaven Hill the Elijah Craig Small Batch bourbon is made from batches of 200 barrels, or less, and is named after the supposed creator of bourbon as we know it. The tale, in a nutshell, is that Reverend Elijah Craig was a moonshiner and one day there was a fire. Some of his barrels got charred in that fire, but were still able to hold his moonshine. After realizing what charring a barrel did for the whiskey he began doing it on purpose and thus invented bourbon.

6.0

Smell:
Cherry and orange zest, slight woody spice

Taste:
Cherry, orange and apples with nutmeg.

Finish: Hot 5
Quick from Mouth to throat, ending in your chest. Lingering floral with light fruit

Notes:
I normally pass on this small batch. There are so many options and I only move towards EC barrel proofs because they have more flavor. This one really steps it up and I would keep this as a drinker if I could get it all the time. It complexes the flavor and adds more to the bourbon. If the store has favorite profiles when choosing and they match your tastes, then its a no brainer to go for them all. For the most part they have a different flavor than the normal small batch products since they are all from one barrel. So technically store picks are all Single Barrel.
